Justine (
Lorenza Izzo), a college freshman in New York City, becomes interested in a
social activism group on her campus, led by an older student named Alejandro (
Ariel Levy) and his girlfriend, Kara. Jonah, a member of the group, invites Justine to join, but her roommate Kaycee (
Sky Ferreira) is wary and cynical of the idea. The group plans a trip to the
Amazon rainforest
to stop a company from logging thousands of acres and obliterating
ancient native tribes there; the goal is to film the logging crews with
cell phones and stream live footage to raise awareness. Justine, whose
father is an attorney for the
United Nations, suggests she could bring further attention to the issue through her father's connections.
The operation is funded by a man named Carlos, who takes the group of students to
Peru;
among them are Justine, Jonah, Amy, Samantha, Lars, Daniel, as well as
Alejandro and Kara. They arrive in the Amazon and begin the protest,
dressing in the loggers' gear and tying themselves to the trees. The
protest receives viral attention on the internet, but Justine is almost
killed by one of the corporate managers who puts a gun to her head due
to a faulty lock that was given to her by Kara being that they wanted to
use her as protection if things were to go bad (they wouldn't be able
to kill Justine due to the fact she was the daughter of an attorney for
the UN). On the plane ride out of the Amazon, an engine explodes, and
the plane crashes into the forest, resulting in the death of Carlos and
other passengers.
Justine, Lars, Jonah, Amy, Samantha, Daniel, Alejandro, Kara survive
the wreckage. They then hear noises coming from all around them, and
Kara is killed by spears to the neck and head. The rest of the group are
shot with
tranquilizing blow darts,
and fall unconscious. They awaken on boats led by the native tribe, and
are taken to the tribe's small village, where they are imprisoned in a
bamboo cage. The female and male elders of the tribe emerge, and hold
Jonah, disoriented and injured from the plane crash, down on a rock.
After being fed a tribal broth, Jonah expresses his gratitude, believing
the tribe intends to nurse his wounds. Instead, the female elder
gouges his eyes out and eats them, followed by his tongue. The rest of the tribe
dismembers him alive as Justine and the others watch, before they finally behead him.
The tribe cooks Jonah's corpse, and it becomes apparent that they are
cannibals,
and believe the students are part of the logging company destroying the
land. Justine, Samantha, and Amy are taken out of the hut, and the
female elder sticks a sharpened instrument into each of their vaginas
while the others watch, which reveals Justine as a virgin. The tribe
takes Justine and paints markings on her and plan to perform a ritual on
her later. After the girls return to the cage, Samantha devises a plan
to escape. They distract one of the watchmen, and Samantha runs to the
river where she gets into a canoe to go downstream. The next day, the
tribe brings the prisoners bowls of slop to eat. As Amy finishes hers,
she notices a piece of skin on the bottom of the bowl, and recognizes
that it bears a tattoo Samantha has on her arm. Realizing she has just
eaten her friend's entrails, Amy smashes the bowl and uses the shard to
slit her own throat, killing herself.
Knowing the tribe will cook Amy's body, Lars stuffs a bag of
marijuana
he had down her throat, hoping it will inebriate the tribe members once
they consume her body. Meanwhile, Alejandro reveals that the protest
they carried out was fraudulent— he had been paid to do it by Carlos,
who owned a rival logging company that wanted to take over the job. The
tribe cooks Amy, and, as Lars intended, all become inebriated from the
marijuana. Justine and Daniel escape, but Lars is stunned with a
tranquilizer dart by Alejandro, and falls back into the cage; Alejandro
selfishly tells Justine and Daniel that he won't be left alone to be
eaten. Justine and Daniel flee, and Lars attempts to escape soon after,
but is eaten alive by the tribe. Justine and Daniel return to the site
of the plane crash, where they find the crash victims impaled on poles.
They hear a cell phone ring from Kara's pocket, and Justine takes it,
but they encounter the tribe, who brings them back to the camp.
Justine is prepared for a
genital mutilation
ceremony by the tribe, and has her body painted and her head adorned
with a crown; Daniel, meanwhile, is tied to a log and has his knees
smashed before being covered in ants. Just before the ceremony is to
take place, the sound of logging machinery is heard, and the female
elder directs the entire tribe into the jungle to fight the loggers.
With the help of a child member of the tribe who has sympathized with
Justine, she is able to break free. Daniel, suffering and on the brink
of death, asks her to kill him, and when she says she cannot, the child
tribe member stabs him in the neck. Alejandro begs her to let him out of
the cage, but she leaves without him.
Fleeing through the jungle, Justine encounters the loggers, who are
armed with machine guns, and witnesses them shooting all of the tribe
members attempting to fight them. She uses Kara's cell phone to
interrupt the event, and pretends she is filming them. They cease fire,
and one of the men recognizes her from the protest. She is taken away
from the logging site by helicopter to safety.
Some time later, back in New York, Justine recounts her experience to
her father and his associates from the United Nations. She tells them
that she was the sole survivor of the initial plane crash, and that the
tribe helped her out of the jungle; she lies in hopes of bringing
awareness to the protest's original cause, and so that her friends'
deaths will not all be in vain. Justine has a nightmare about Alejandro
returning from the jungle, and awakens one morning in her dorm room;
Kaycee asks her if she's okay. She looks out the bedroom window onto the
campus, where another group of student activists are demonstrating for
another cause with T-shirts with Alejandro's face on it.
Sometime after the credits roll, it is interrupted by a glitch of
some sort showing a map. A phone ringing is overheard, followed by a
conversation between Justine and Alejandro's sister, Lucia. During this
she says she believes she has recognized him on a satellite GPS image
which then zooms in for us to see a blurry man (believed to be
Alejandro) standing in the jungle.
